Schaumburg AM Rotary recently obtained a District 6440 Simplified Grant (DSG) that was used to benefit the Schaumburg Twp. Food Pantry. The grant money was applied towards a club service project that included the purchase and delivery of approximately $2,000 worth of food, paper products and other essentials by its members. Vibha Tambe, Community Service Director, applied for the grant on the club’s behalf and coordinated the purchase with the Hoffman Estates Aldi store located at 375 West Higgins Road.
Rotarians personally contribute to the club’s food pantry fund and periodically shop to stock the shelves based upon need. For an individual Rotary Club project to qualify for a DSG, the project must be short term in duration and benefit the local community by being either humanitarian or educational in nature, take place within the club’s service area and include hands-on participation by its members. District 6440 matched the club’s $1,000 contribution to the cause dollar for dollar, making it possible for this community based food pantry to continue its mission of providing assistance to local families and households.
Schaumburg A.M. Rotary meets Wednesday mornings at 7:00 a.m. at Poplar Creek Country Club in Hoffman Estates. Rotarians participate in community service projects both at home and abroad and work to promote good will, peace and understanding. Visit www.schaumburgamrotary.org for more information.
Avion's Social Responsibilty!
Avion takes its corporate social responsibility very seriously. The founders of Avion believe that internet can be the most potent tool to take education to unprivileged and marginalized sections of society. Since our development center is in India, we have adopted an Indian village called Kotluk on India's west coast for our pilot project. We have brought internet to this hamlet which is around 300 miles south of Mumbai. Bringing the internet to this village has opened a whole new world to the village children. While they were destined to be at the bottom of the social pyramid earlier, they can today aspire to be a part of India's powerful Information Technology workforce thereby bringing their families out of absolute poverty. In about a year's time, we are hoping to bring the Net to ten such villages. We will then be connecting these villages through a portal. The portal will then be used to spread vocational and technical education, health awareness programmes, meteorological information as well as helping daily wage farm labourers find employment by creating an online employment exchange.
